First timers (intro)

First time playing the djembe? In this short intro you will get introduced to the djembe so that you are ready for the fundamentals class.

Djembe Fundamentals

New to playing the djembe? This is where to start! In this class you will learn the basics to get you going.

  • the three basic sounds of the djembe: bass-tone-slap

  • basic rhythms

  • call (signal to start and stop)

  • échauffement (signal to speed up)

This usually takes a month of classes for a focused student to achieve the basic understanding in order to graduate to the regular class.

Djembe

This is the class for you that is comfortable playing the djembe and has some understanding of African rhythms. Here you will learn solo techniques, arrangements, breaks and more complicated rhythms including 12/8 time signature. We have a running syllabus where we focus on a certain rhythm for approximately a month.

West African dance with Alky plus

Alky’s West African Dance class is a traditional dance class from Guinea is accompanied by live djembe and dundun drums. Move your whole body and feel the connection dancing to live musicians can create. You’ll learn traditional movement patterns. Alky has a high energy style and his classes are a guaranteed workout. His class consist of a warm-up, diagonal movement patterns across the floor and relaxation. This class is open for all levels and will be adjusted to the participants.

Alky Plus - Dance

Alky Plus is a professional dancer and choreographer from Guinea Conakry, educated both at the famous dancing scene of Conakry and from the National Guinean Academy of Arts, specializing in traditional Guinean dances and rhythms. In 2012 he founded his own dance company in Dubreka, Guinea, called Compagnie Alkhaly Camara, now active in Copenhagen.

Alky has many years of experience in teaching all levels and all ages and has performed with various dance groups in both Africa and Europe. Dance is Alky's great passion, and he lives to educate and share the unique Guinean dance culture. Do not miss Alky’s fantastic energy and dance sharing knowledge, straight from the source

Jack Strand - Djembe
Jack Started playing the djembe 6 years ago. His primary teachers are the Koné family from Burkina Faso. He has been learning from them in Denmark as well as in Ouagadougou. Now he wants to share his learnings with you!

The aim with these classes is to provide you with musical literacy that allows you to ‘speak’ with others of that language, the West African djembe language — and have fun!
